Honestly I feel physically ill.

I just need to vent really, sorry if this is really incoherent...and sorry if this isn't the right sub. I tried a few others but they seem dead... anyways..

I really put my blood, sweat and tears into this field. I worked my ass off through my CS degree, spent hundreds of hours on the side making projects and prepping for big tech interviews, etc.

I ended up joining FAANG. Yes I made tons of money (at peak I was making $300k) but I quickly burnt out because of insane work hours, toxic management and unrealsitic deadlines. I worked at Amazon, Meta and Google. Unfortunately they were all the same, I talk about it in a few other posts I made for those curious.

Long story short, I took a ~40% pay cut ($300k -> $180k) to work at a big bank.

It was a MUCH better experience. I had normal work hours (30-40ish hours per week), great coworkers (many of whom were just laid off with me) and fantastic management that wasn't into micromanagement.

I saw a future here to be honest. I am passionate about engineering, I love coding, I wanted to make it my entire career but I just don't know if that's feasible at this point.

My team of 10 developers + 3 analysts was just let go. The writing was on the wall because there were talks about it earlier this year.

The company started adopting AI last year.. started super light. But they started investing more and more into it.

I will be 100% honest with you. I was skeptical so I never used it or studied about it much. thought it was another fad. well I guess not, because we apparently have enough productivity gains from it to make our teams work redundant. All of the work moved from our (now non-existant) team to a different team that works on related applications.

I don't know 100% if this is because of AI, but management straight up said it is. Maybe we were going to get laid off anyways, I don't fucking know man..

All I know is that AI is advancing at a crazy fucking rate. I'm beating myself up for not seeing it sooner. I thought it was a fad, I never took the time to look into it until now.

Genuinely no clue what I'm going to do. I have a decent network. I know I can get another software engineering job, but how long will that one last?

I just feel lost. I put too much time into this field. Been into it ever since I was a kid, you know? Hard to let that go.. but maybe I have no choice.

Somehow, AI art is both terrible and shitty but also a threat to artists. Which one is it? Is the quality bad enough that artists are safe, or is it good enough to be serious competition?

I’ve seen the conclusion of the witch hunt against AI art. It often ends up hurting REAL artists. People getting accused of using AI on something they personally created and getting accosted by the art community at large.

The newer models like ChatGPT images, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Veo 2 show how insanely powerful the world model of AI is getting, that these machines are truly learning and internalizing concepts, even if in a different way than humans. The whole outcry about theft doesn’t make much sense anymore if you just give in and recognize that we are teaching actual intelligent beings, and this is the primordial soup of that.

But yeah social media is genuinely unusable anytime AI goes viral for being too good at something. It’s always the same paradoxes, somehow it’s nice looking and it looks like shit, somehow it’s not truly learning anything but also going to replace all artists, somehow AI artists are getting attacked for using AI and non-AI artists are also getting attacked for using AI.

Maybe it’s just people scared of change. And maybe the reason I find it so incredibly annoying is because we already use AI everyday and it feels like we’re sitting in well lit dwellings with electric lights while we hear the lamplighters chanting outside demanding we give it all up.
